Medicare Supplements are a health insurance policy sold by private heath insurance companies to fill the “gaps” in Medicare coverage.
Medicare Part A and Part B together are called Original Medicare. Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older and for others with certain disabilities. Part A is your hospital insurance and is generally free – you have to have worked for 10 years and paid into Social Security. Part B is your doctors/outpatient insurance and has a monthly premium associated with it.
Original Medicare is a great start, but it was never designed to cover everything. For example, there is a hospital copay (Part A) and Part B only pays 80% of the Medicare covered outpatient services. Also prescription drugs are not covered under Original Medicare.
Medicare Supplement (ask Medigap plans) are all “standardized” by the Federal Government and must follow Federal and state laws designed to protect you. The important thing to remember is that a “Plan F” from one carrier is the same as a “Plan F” from another carrier. For more about things you should know about Medicare Supplement Plans click here.
Part D covers your prescriptions and is not included with a Medicare Supplement – it must be purchased separately. Part D plans can vary widely and the best plan for you will depend on which prescriptions you are taking.
